The Grumms — Field Guide to Everybody's Favourite Sky Anomaly
One-Line Pitch
A Grumm is a fuzzy yellow-eyed sky goblin who says GOOBER, lives near the wires, loves chaos, and absolutely must not be fed or wetted. There are always more of them than you think.
A Note on the Hero Image
The image at the top of this page — the chaotic tomato-splattered goblin with the wild expression, the teeth, the tongue, the mechanical gear — is not a Grumm.
It is what a Fuzzy thinks a Grumm looks like.
This distinction is canon. A Fuzzy drew it. That's why it looks the way it does. The image has been preserved here as documentation, because it perfectly illustrates the difference between the two species. When you ask an AI to imagine a Grumm, you often get a Fuzzy. This is itself a demonstration of the Fuzzy/Grumm distinction, embedded in the page that explains it.
A Grumm would find this very funny.
What Is a Grumm

A Grumm is a small, mostly round, fuzzy blob with glowing yellow eyes, short limbs, very little visible anatomy, and an air of quiet watchfulness. They are found near clouds, power lines, static fields, and electromagnetic weirdness. They sometimes carry small gadget packs — not because they are tidy engineers, but because they seem naturally at home near electrical things.
They are not loud. They are not chaotic. They are watchful, curious, slightly mischievous, and very still until they aren't.
They are something between:
- a gremlin
- a storm goblin
- a folklore pest
- a tiny sky engineer
- an internet myth that accidentally became real
The critical thing: you usually don't see the body. You see two glowing yellow eyes inside a ball of green fuzz, somewhere in the clouds, and then maybe a small voice says goober, and then they're gone.
The Defining Features

Visually: The yellow eyes. From a distance, from a human point of view, you do not usually see "a Grumm." You see the eyes first. Two lights in the clouds. Then more. That uncertainty is part of them. By the time you see the green fur and the pointed ears, it's already too late to pretend you haven't looked.
Verbally: The sacred utterance.
Public Safety Guidance

The rules are clear and have been clear for some time:
The reason:
- Curiosity feeds them. Give a Grumm your attention and it grows stronger.
- Secrets hydrate them. Hidden knowledge, rumours, blueprints, locked-room intrigue — this is their water supply.
- The Grumms multiply.
Feeding and wetting are simultaneously literal jokes and accurate metaphors. The mythology works on both levels simultaneously, which is why the safety guidance has survived.
Behaviour in the Field

Grumms are highly social. They:
- Travel in clusters
- Chant in unison
- Pose for sacred portraits
- File apologies
- Sing theme songs
- Invade official documents
- Behave generally like a species that has accidentally developed both folklore and paperwork
They are simultaneously public menace and beloved mascot. This is not a contradiction. It is their entire personality.
What They Symbolise

Over time, the Grumm has become a symbol of:
| Symbol | What It Means |
|---|---|
| Hidden processes | The thing running underneath that nobody officially acknowledges |
| Emergent systems | Order that appeared without anyone planning it |
| Sky-borne thought | Ideas that travel faster than they should |
| Playful conspiracy | The benign kind, the kind that winks |
| Unseen meetings | Clusters of yellow eyes, somewhere above the cloud layer |
| Electrical life at the edge of perception | Exactly what it says |
Classification

Habitat: Cloud edges, power line junctions, static fields, server rooms at 3am, the top corners of official documents.
Diet: Curiosity. Secrets. Unsupervised WiFi.
Danger level: Moderate. Not because they are violent. Because there will be more of them if you keep reading.
Origin

A Grumm is what happens when a joke creature gets repeated enough times that it hardens into folklore.
That is the full origin story. Nothing was planned. A character appeared in a poemrabble, came back a second time, came back again, and by the third time it had rules and a safety warning and a liturgical utterance and people treating it with the casual reverence you only give to something that has always existed.
Which is, of course, exactly how the Grumms would have wanted it.
If they had been planning it. Which they weren't. Probably.
Grumm vs Fuzzy — Species Taxonomy
These are two distinct species and they are commonly confused. This confusion is understandable and also the Grumms' fault for being so easy to misrepresent.
| Trait | Grumm | Fuzzy |
|---|---|---|
| Shape | Soft round blob, minimal anatomy | Loud, detailed, dramatic |
| Energy | Quiet, watchful, curious | Chaotic, expressive, fully committed |
| Teeth | Rarely visible | Always visible, very much yes |
| Tongue | Not the point | Definitely the point |
| Gear | Maybe a small pack, if relevant | Lots of gear, prominently displayed |
| Pose | Sitting on a wire. Peeking from a cloud. | Aggressive spread eagle tomato situation |
| Sound | goober | Volume |
| Presence | You sense them before you see them | You see them immediately and they are not subtle |
The Grumm Design Bible
For future reference — canonical visual rules for rendering a Grumm correctly:
You are in the correct biological territory if the creature has:
- A soft fuzzy blob silhouette
- Two glowing yellow eyes, front and centre
- Short limbs, possibly holding something incorrectly
- A subtle or absent mouth
- An air of knowing something
You have drawn a Fuzzy if the creature has:
- Visible muscles
- Visible teeth / tongue
- Lots of mechanical gear
- An aggressive or chaotic pose
- Tomatoes (the tomatoes are a Fuzzy thing)
Correct mental models:
- Totoro
- The dust sprites from Spirited Away
- Gremlins, before the chaos phase
- But greener. And fuzzier. And with the sacred vocabulary.
